2007 Grant Recipients

The Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada is grateful for your generous offerings at local World Day of Prayer services across Canada. These offerings enable WICC to provide $70,000 in grants to projects that benefit women and children around the world. Grant applications, due March 1, are available from the WICC office. The following projects received grants in 2007:

International

Colombia: $3,000 to “Workshop program on women’s rights” (Centro Popular Para America Latina de Comunicacion - CEPALC). Goal: to make known to women from Christian churches the social and political rights of women.

Bangladesh: $3,000 to “Women Empowerment Project” (Bangladesh Rural Youth Fellowship Centre). Goal: to work with women from seven communities on literacy, health and social education, plus training to produce items for local market.

Barbados: $3,000 to “Eradication of Stigma and Discrimination for Persons Living with HIV/AIDS” (CARE). Goal: to hold training workshops for for people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA), and form coalitions with faith-based organizations.

Grenada: $2,000 to “Livelihood for women-headed households” (Grenada Community Development Agency). Goal: to train and support ten rural women-headed households as they move from 10 to 25 chickens.

Honduras: $3,000 to “Empowering Rural Honduran Women Through Micro Enterprise” (Horizons of Friendship/Simiente Foundation). Goal: to provide training to women from 12 communities to help them manage their businesses.

India: $2,500 to “Empowering Dalit Women” (Centre for Rural Development) Goal: to help Dalit women advocate for their rights and empower them by initiating savings and credit processes.

India: $3,000 to “Empowering Women on Human Rights Education” (WORD) Goal: to train women/girls on their rights, and establish a legal clinic to reduce human rights violations.

Kenya: $3,000 to “Communication Program” (Menyinkwa People Living with HIV and AIDS Self-Help Group ) Goal: To train PLWHA on public speaking, nutrition, mother-to-child transmission and awareness campaigns in schools, churches, and markets.

Kenya: $3,000 to “Slums Community Response” (Slums First Kenya). Goal: to train youth to do outreach to communities and schools on women’s health issues through use of a mobile theatre.

Lebanon: $2,000 to “HIV Awareness and Education” (World Student Christian Federation) Goal: to hold a seminar for 24 young women focusing on HIV awareness and other health issues.

Lesotho: $3,000 to “Empowering Young Women” (Help Lesotho) Goal: To organize two conferences for 52 women and men on gender equity, health and leadership development.

Malaysia: $3,000 to “In God’s Image” (Asian Women’s Christian Resource Centre) Goal: to engage young women in Asian feminist theology through workshops and the journal “In God’s Image”. 

Nepal: $2,000 to “Ramechap Rural Health Improvement Project” (World Neighbours Canada) Goal: to improve people’s health by providing hygienic toilets and rainwater harvesting systems.

Philippines: $2,000 to “Advancing Human Rights” (People’s Organization for Social Transformation) Goal: to train women trained as human rights educators in their own communities, and provide training on project management and budgeting for women.

Philippines: $2,000 to “Strengthening Community Based Women’s Health Promotion” (Inter Pares for Likhaan) Goal: To to support health care services by community based clinics in in metro Manila, and strengthen a national women’s alliance.

South Africa: $2,000 to “Production of product catalogue and brochure” (Iziko Io Lwazi Craftworkers). Goal: to produce a catalogue and brochure about the craftworkers’ aims and objectives.

South Korea: $3,000 to “Transforming Church through Drama workshop” (Namyangju Women’s Centre for Migrant Workers): Goal: to develop drama worship resources, test them in migrant women’s church and publish them in English and Korean.

Tanzania: $2,000 to “Legal Literacy Training Project” (Match International) Goal: to conduct legal literacy workshops, train  paralegals and provide legal aid to women, and conduct will writing seminars.

Canada

British Columbia: $2,000 to “Canadian Theological Students’ Conference” (Canadian Theological Students’ Association). Goal: To hold a national conference in Vancouver and foster dialogue and understanding among theological students throughout Canada.

Manitoba: $4,000 to “Family Violence: Does it happen in our congregation?” (South Central Committee on Family Violence – Genesis House). Goal: to build a connection to the churches in the Winkler area using a specific pamphlet and presentations.

Manitoba: $1,000 to “Cry of the Heart: How can we find hope in the rural landscape?” (Canadian Rural Church Network) Goal: to fund day-long exposure trips to local agencies during the quadrennial meeting of the International Rural Church Association.

Manitoba: $2,000 to “SCM National Conference” (Student Christian Movement) Goal: to expose students attending a national conference held in Winnipeg to ideas and analysis related to the economic system through the lens of faith.

Ontario: $1,000 to “Courage to Heal: TRUTH Project” (Sheena’s Place) Goal: To create an anthology of writing by women survivors that will contribute to literature on childhood sexual abuse and violence against women.

Ontario: $3,500 to “Women with Disabilities and Deaf Women’s Program” (Springtide Resources) Goal: To provide training and support to both women with disabilities and service providers.

Ontario: $2,000 to “Bridge Funding for Settlement Services” (FCJ Refugee Centre) Goal: To provide temporary and affordable shelter for refugee women and their children.

Ontario: $4,000 to “Family as Source of Values and Spirituality”(Ecumenical Network of Women of African Heritage) Goal: To empower women in facing the violence facing children and youth.

Saskatchewan: $4,000 to “Spirituality Program” (Tamara’s House, Services for Sexual Abuse Survivors) Goal: to explore the role of spirituality within the agency, and further integrate spirituality into the agency’s programs.
 

Proceeds from the World Day of Prayer also support the international organization, cover the costs of printing and distributing WDP services and resources throughout Canada and support the ongoing work of WICC.
