2009 Grant Recipients

The Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada is grateful for your generous offerings at local World Day of Prayer services across Canada. These offerings enable WICC to provide $88,500 in grants to projects that benefit women and children around the world. Grant applications, due March 1, are available from the WICC office. The following projects received grants in 2009:

International

  • Kenya: $2,000 to “Classroom Construction Development Fund ”(Ack St. Andrew's Simenya Child Development Center)
  • Kenya: $500 to “Kitale Women's Development Group ” (Hope for the Nations)
  • Kenya: $2,000 to “Female Genital Mutiliation Project ” (Imani Initiative Group)
  • Liberia: $2,000 to “Empowerment Program for Single Women with Children” (Hope for the Nations - Provision of Hope)
  • Nigeria : $2,000 to “Workshop & Field based training of rural women” (Farmers Improvement Union).
  • Senegal: $2,000 to “Empowering APROFES in the Struggle Against Violence” (Canadian Crossroads International).
  • South Africa : $1,000 to “Laptop Computer & printer” (Izik lo Lwazi).
  • Uganda: $2,000 to “Banana Plantation” (St. Padre Pio Women's Group).
  • Uganda: $1,000 to “Rural Youth empowerment through Communication” (Volunteers for Development Association in Uganda (VODA Uganda))
  • Bangladesh: $2,000 to “Micro-trade Skills Training and Start up capital” (Platform of Women's Empowerment and Rights (POWER)).
  • India: $2,000 to “Women's vocational training” (Little Lambs Educational Trust).
  • India: $2,000 to “Alternative Occupation for HIV & sex workers” (National Mother and Child Welfare Organization).
  • Pakistan: $2,000 to “Empowering employment situation for marginalized/oppressed women” (Development Communication Association).
  • Papua New Guinea : $5,000 to “Women Against Violence” (Bongol Women's Group).
  • Papua New Guinea: $5,000 to “HIV/AIDS Education Project ” (Ouna Cahtolic Women's Group).
  • Philippines: $2,000 to “Empowering Marginalized women/youth” (Inter Pares).
  • Philippines: $2,000 to “Promoting Organic Farming with Indigenous rice production” (People's Organzation for Social Transformation (POST))
  • Guyana: $4,000 to “Woman Power” (Stephen Wade Evangelistic Association).
  • Haiti: $2,500 to "Workshop and Women's Rights & Empowerment" (Redeemed Children Organization)
  • Haiti: $2,500 to "Sewing School for Women" (Sionfonds for Haiti)
  • Jamaica: $2,000 to " St. Thomas Women's Agricultural Initiative" (MATCH International Centre)
  • Nicaragua: $2,000 to "Strengthening Community Leadership" (Horizons of Friendship)
  • Barbados: $5,000 to " WDP Caribbean/North American Region Quadrennial Plan of Action"

Canada

  • Ontario: $3,600 to “Scarborough Young Immigrant Women's Health Network” (Canadian Centre for Women's Education and Development).
  • Nova Scotia: $3,000 to “Coverdale's Youth Services”(Coverdale Centre)
  • Ontario: $3,000 to “Bridge Funding for Settlement Services” (FCJ Refugee Centre)
  • Ontario: $3,000 to “Getting Started ”(Matthew House Refugee)
  • Ontario: $2,500 to “Support Group for Nannies & Caregivers" (North York Women's Centre (NYWC))
  • Saskatchewan: $2,300 to “Healing and Moving Beyond the Pain” (Partners for Rural Family Support).
  • British Columbia : $3,000 to “Prevention of Violence Against Women” (Prince George & District Elizabeth Fry Society)
  • Saskatchewan: $2,600 to “Hope for the Future" (Regina HELP))
  • British Columbia: $4,500 to “Planning for Subsistence, Women's Knowledge” (S'hul-etun Health Society)
  • Ontario: $3,500 to “Women with Disabilities and Deaf Women's Program” (Springtide Resources)
  • Saskatchewan: $4,000 to “Moshum & Kokum Inc. - Cree Children's Lunch Program" (Women of the Dawn Counselling Centre Inc.)
  • Ontario: $4,000 to " Empowering Rural Women in Making Healthy Food Choices" (YWCA of Peterborough, Victoria and Haliburton)
  • Ontario: $2,000 to "Canadian Theological Students' Conference" (Canadian Theological Students' Association)
  • Ontario: $2,000 to " Student Christian Movement General Conference" (Student Christian Movement of Canada).
 
Proceeds from the World Day of Prayer also support the international organization, cover the costs of printing and distributing WDP services and resources throughout Canada and support the ongoing work of WICC.
