World Day of Prayer

The Council is best known for its role in the Canadian celebration of the World Day of Prayer, an international ecumenical movement of prayer and action. Each year, women from a different country write a service which reflects their justice concerns through a biblical lens. On the first Friday in March, Christians of all denominations in more than 2,000 communities across Canada and in more than 170 countries come together to pray and take action in solidarity with the people of that country. Materials are available for order by the end of October each year.

Fellowship of the Least Coin

WICC coordinates the Fellowship of the Least Coin in Canada, a global movement of prayer for peace, justice and reconciliation. The "least coin" is an active symbol supporting opportunities for women throughout the world. WICC publishes monthly prayer concerns, which focus on different countries and global issues, and distributes a service for the Ingathering of Least Coins each September.

Justice

WICC is committed to justice for women, and is working to educate and encourage churches to adopt appropriate actions in response to issues that affect women's lives. The Council is currently focusing on issues of human trafficking, racism, and violence against women.

The Council produces worship, theological and educational resources. A liturgy for use on December 6, Canada's national day of remembrance and action on violence against women, is prepared annually and distributed free of charge. WICC has recently published a practical guide for individuals, groups and churches, called Healing Waters: Churches Working to End Violence Against Women.

WICC supports the World Council of Churches' Decade to Overcome Violence (DOV) which runs from 2001 to 2010, and works in partnership with groups such as the Canadian Ecumenical Anti-Racism Network.

Spirituality

WICC supports regional and national gatherings, such as the "Women Doing Theology in Canada" conferences in Winnipeg in 2002 and in Montreal in 2005, enabling women to come together to explore their spirituality and their faith. The Council also encourages sharing of resources among church women's organizations.
