Highlights 2006/07

  • Human trafficking is the new slavery of the 21st Century, according to Sr. Eugenia Bonetti, coordinator of anti-trafficking activities in Italy. She spoke at a gathering hosted by WICC in October 2006 where faith-based organizations shared information and strategies to end trafficking in Canada. The recent issue of Making Waves, “Releasing the Captives: Taking action on trafficking of women and children”, was planned by a guest editorial group of experts on the subject.
  • “Journeying Towards Reconciliation”, the theme of the Racial Justice Resource for Canadian churches in 2007, will mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British colonies. WICC is participating in the development and promotion of this resource through the Canadian Ecumenical Anti-Racism Network. Watch for it on our website in February 2007.
  • WICC has held two study days on right relationships with Aboriginal peoples, looking at the Canadian history of colonization, the violence that is perpetrated against Aboriginal women and at initiatives to build relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples in various communities across the country. Council members have made personal commitments to build connections in their communities.
  • The World Day of Prayer International Committee Quadrennial meeting will be hosted by WICC in May. We welcome more than 150 World Day of Prayer representatives from more than 100 countries who will be planning future World Days of Prayer, as well as learning and strategizing about HIV/AIDS in their respective regions.
  • WICC is participating with other organizations concerned about the negative impact on women of recent federal government actions: cuts to the operating budget of Status of Women, cancellation of the Court Challenges Program, barring of advocacy and lobbying by women’s groups receiving federal funds, and cancellation of a national child care program. WICC links this work to church networks.
  • The Council is introducing new ways to connect more frequently with all of our networks, members and partners: a new website launched in January 2007; an e-bulletin service to begin in the spring, and a grassroots public relations program initiated by Council members.
  • WICC members participated in international planning meetings this fall. The Fellowship of the Least Coin, a movement of prayer for peace and reconciliation, celebrated its 50th Anniversary in Malaysia; and a World Day of Prayer consultation of the Caribbean/North American region was held in Guyana.
